Arriving by Air to Guatemala City
If you arrive by air to Guatemala City. I recommend the following itinerary.
•

•
Over night stay in the city -
o
Biltmore Express Hotel or
o
Los Torres Hotel
•
Ground transport to the Rio Dulce
o
Litegua Bus Line or
o
Linea Dorada Bus Lines or
o
Van Charter to Rio Dulce - Contact the Marina
•
Arrive in Rio Dulce - Contact Marios via VHF (CH68) from Brunos or Contact
Marios via Phone if you have a cell phone.
My thoughts on arriving.
I recommend that you plan on staying the evening. The road traffic from
Guatemala City to the Rio Dulce is more congested in the afternoon, so I
recommend a early start for the trip. If you arrive in the morning, no problem. If
your plane lands in the afternoon, plan on staying the evening. There are many
fine hotels in Zone 10 of the city, I have used the Biltmore Express numerous times
and find the staff and facilities excellent value for the money. The hotel offers a
free shuttle bus from the airport to the hotel every 30 minutes. The rooms are
clean, air-conditioned and the staff speaks English. Your stay includes a free
breakfast in the morning.
Linea Dorada vs Litegua? I use Linea Dorada to travel to the Rio from the City.
This is because it is an express bus, no stops in between. Except for a lunch stop.
It is (usually) air-conditioned. The seats are usually good, and seating is assigned
when you buy your ticket. I use Litegua to go from the Rio to the City, solely
because the timetable is more convenient.
If you are traveling to the City to catch a plane, keep in mind that road conditions
can sometimes take the four hour trip and extend it.... a lot longer. So I
recommend traveling the day before, Relax at the hotel, and check out some of the
restaurants in Zone 10.
Arriving by Launcha from Belize
For the truly adventurous, you can try the launcha service from Belize! There is a
reasonably priced service that departs Punta Gorda, Beiize on a daily basis and
makes a run to Puerto Barrios, (if you pay a little extra... you can get the launcha
to stop in Livingston, change to the river launcha service and have them drop you at
the marina. Bring a light jacket and pack light! If you want more details on this
trip download the trip report from one of our guests...
Where is Marios?
Marios is located approximately 16 miles up the Rio Dulce, or Sweet River as it translates to
English. The Google map located here is zoomed in on our home in the Tropics. You can use
the controls to zoom out and see where we are in relation to the Gulfette, Lago Izabal and
the beautiful Western Caribbean!
